Australian designers Peter Strateas and Mario-Luca Carlucci are dominating the Australian fashion scene. Not only did Strateas.Carlucci recently win regional finals for the International Woolmark Prize in both menswear (a category created just this year) and womenswear; the duo also won Tiffany & Co. National Designer Award in Melbourne back in March. Though originally not a duo, creating commissioned sculptural pieces separately, Strateas and Carlucci are pursuing conscientious garment production with their limited edition, handcrafted designs.
The spring collection has every aspect of transitioning to the sultry season without losing the A/W feeling of heavy textures and pigmented shades. Warm wool sweaters, cool leather jackets, and a nonchalant blend of asymmetrical cuts and sheer materials see the transition through cold to hot. These edgy, minimalistic garments pay homage to underground subcultures and art movements like grunge and punk .The fresh-faced models with ponytail extensions help create a streamlined silhouette. Down the runway, the models’ wrists, adorned with silver Grecian cuffs, pair nicely with the minimalistic pieces. Strateas.Carlucci includes a seasonal handcast piece of jewelry with every garment.
Menswear is composed of polish and whimsy. Strateas.Carlucci is superb at playing with proportions. Oversized shirts and baggy shorts never seemed cooler on these floppy haired models. Throughout the collection, the men’s look transforms with dark blue overcoats and leather jackets that really make you debate why people buy so much black. Yet, the brand brings you back to black throughout the latter of the collection with black leather jackets and overcoats.
Australian artist Emily Kngwarreye has had a lasting influence on the Australian art scene, and has clearly reached into design with Strateas.Carlucci. The label’s ability to create trendy, edgy, and minimalist designs translates to a saleable collection. It’s even more incredible that every design is handcrafted. Each item’s place of manufacture is marked in the limited quantity production run. Strateas.Carlucci may be a new name, but this collection’s debut is a testament that it’s attune to the minimalist age we’re currently living in.
