Fashion doesn’t necessitate garish visual impact. Through the avant-garde and enigmatic collections are others that still speak sartorially without outlandish pompousness or pride. 87MM’s Fall/Winter 2016 season is one of these collections. The joint venture between top models Kim Won-joong and Park Jiwoon, their recent showing at Seoul Fashion Week is relatively conservative in its earthy color palette and clean tailoring. But this is no weakness. The simple colors only highlight Kim and Park’s eye for detail and texture. A traditional diamond-quilted pattern makes a pleasant surprise when seen on trousers and coats. Typically used to line winter weather garments, it becomes the centerpiece in 87 MM’s collection. Fur is also given a modern twist, taking the shape of campy hot pants. The rust-colored, suede utility jacket is absolutely gorgeous, as is the varsity jacket in oxblood velvet. This collection is a testament to 87 MM’s maturity and growth as a brand. Almost contemplative, it shows refinement and a key understanding of place within the Korean fashion industry.
