The idea of ‘Americana sportswear’ comes with certain connotations, mainly of frat boys in the Hamptons with collars upturned on their pastel polos. But David Hart has reclaimed the image of classic Americana sportswear. Yes, although his Spring/Summer 2017 collection is full of polos and sleeveless tees and bermuda shorts were a primary staple to the majority of his looks, the collection spoke to the wardrobe staples of a modern, refined man. Single button blazers were done in silhouettes of palm trees with a background of lambent sunset hues. Two-piece suits with high-hemmed trousers were paired with color blocked polos. His take on suits were a black tie affair, as two-piece suits in a shade of charcoal and a printed psuedo-ikat style were finished off with silken cummerbunds. Riffs on traditional psuedo-tacky Hawaiian shirts looked surprisingly modern paired with subdued trousers in woven linens and cottons, all finished with Hart’s signature meticulous tailoring. Hart channeled the essences of American vacation-wear, from the kitschy Hawaiian shirts to the riffs on the wardrobe of Hawaii 5-0 to the air of Ivy League frat boy, and created a selection of separates that would integrate seamlessly into even the most downtown of wardrobes.
