The equitable association of traditional masculinity to aggression, lust and power is as archaic as time itself. Where Tom Selleck and his well-dressed upper lip were once the epitome of virile manhood, we luckily find ourselves in a time and space where the definition of masculinity is nuanced and tailored to each person. From buzzcuts to dreadlocks and Brooks Brothers to Rick Owens, there is no discrete, static concept of what makes a man a man. Everyone has his own bildungsroman, his own story detailing the emergence from boy to man. In this portrait series, “Boys Will Be Boys,” JD Barnes explores the faces of those on the cusp of manhood, a point at which their identities will be subject to an electric flux and blossoming change.
