Byungmun Seo has not been out of the classroom for very long, but his creations could pass for those of a veteran visionaire. The Korean-born designer’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection might be limited to shades of black and white, but the clothing is still, nothing short of eye-catching.
The collection focuses on head-turning outerwear pieces – one key piece being a jacket cut with a stand shawl collar and detailed with pockets, black hardware and fabric belt strips along the sleeves. Other cold-weather items offered included a denim jacket in white or black and a trench coat incarnation of the jean jacket.
For warmer weather, Seo included sleeveless tank tops and skin-baring mesh shirts. The only sweater in the collection was designed with a unique cutout in the collarbone area, featuring panels of different textures of ribbed material. The matching pants, at first glance, seem to be simple black bottoms, but a closer look reveals the cargo details and sumptuous leathery material. Looks were finished with black high-top sneakers, perfecting the street-style riff the London-based designer aimed for with his offerings. In a sea of streetwear designers, Seo managed to separate his offerings from the rest, with the use of spotlight detailing and bold tonal play.
