The Arrival: Andrea Jiapei Li Fall/Winter 2017 NYFW

The Arrival
Runway, Women, Collections, Runway

I love a great narrative, especially when it’s followed by even greater wares. This season Andrea Jiapei Li hit my sweet spot. Based off of the eight-time Oscar-nominated extraterrestrial sci-fi flick The Arrival, the award-winning LVMH Prize, H&M Design Award finalist and VFiles Made Fashion winner, created a collection for a woman on a mission. Quite literally the film’s protagonist Louise Banks (Amy Adams), a linguistics professor turned space-age heroine.

Hints could be found in a silver coated bomber jacket— Banks’ hazmat suit; a white parka with water repellent nylon backing—a protective shield against the unknown, and in an olive ruched sleeve shirtdress— the unknown.

But “Embrace” the title of the collection, is more than just interesting clothes and stylish silhouettes, it’s got character. Perhaps even more so than any fiction the silver screen can concoct. Look number six, a burgundy double-breasted cashmere blazer with matching trousers will soon have a narrative of its own, I guarantee you, perhaps on the backs of Hollywood’s leading heroines, (if they know what’s good for em’) and most definitely on the shoulders of a discerning editor or two. Come fall, we’ll all wait patiently (myself included) heroines, unknowns and mortal women alike, for their arrival.
