Seething with a quiet fury, Barbara Sanchez-Kane made her point clear by rebuking government policies in her Spring/Summer 2018 collection. There’s a fighting spirit in her work, a sense of passionate rebellion against the rules of fashion and the larger rules that govern our day-to-day lives. Asymmetric cut-outs and gaudy embroidery are only the beginning. Sanchez-Kane took the liberty of pushing her collection further with silk flowers, water-bottle accessories and steel rods bent in the shapes of stiletto boots. As a Mexican born designer, it’s expected that the reactions to current American politics would manifest in Sanchez-Kane’s latest work. At this point, her New York Fashion Week runway was obviously more about the message than wearability of design.
